Volunteering

NOTE: MLC is NOT currently accepting new student volunteer placements, as our volunteer pool is full.   We will re-open our recruitment program when placements become available in the future.   We do, however, encourage you to apply to other community legal centres, if you have a genuine interest in supporting the community through volunteering.

Volunteer solicitors, with at least 1-2 years’ experience in our key areas of practice, are still welcome to apply.

Are you interested in gaining experience and helping your community?

Check out this video, to learn more – Volunteering at MLC.

We currently offer the following volunteer opportunities:

Daytime front desk volunteers (law students and/or admin)

Duties include: taking calls, greeting clients face-to-face, and various office administrative duties.  We usually require attendance at least once per week.

Advice session intake volunteer (law students only)

We run legal advice sessions twice weekly, on Tuesdays (6:00 pm – 8:00 pm) and Thursdays (2:30 pm – 5:00 pm). Our advice session volunteers are responsible for collecting client information, conducting conflict checks and obtaining client instructions.  We require our advice session volunteers to have completed at least one year of their law degree.  We also conduct formal interviews to assess the suitability of applicants.

Practical Legal Training (PLT) Placements

We provide a limited number of formal PLT placements each year. As a general rule, we recruit our PLT students from our pool of ‘advice’ session volunteers.

Research positions

We sometimes require volunteers to assist with specific research projects. As a general rule, we recruit our research students from our ‘advice’ session volunteers.  We may also advertise specific opportunities, from time to time.

Solicitor Volunteers

Volunteer solicitors attend during our weekly advice sessions (Tuesdays 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and Thursdays 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm), to provide telephone and face-to-face advice to clients.  Solicitor volunteers must have at least 1-2 years’ post admission experience in one of our major areas of practice.

Pro Bono Opportunities

We partner with various law firms to provide pro bono advice and assistance to our clients.

If you are interested in discussing pro bono partnership opportunities, please contact the principal solicitor on (02) 4628 2042.
